Namaste.
Joan (Andrea Moor) is the CEO of Jojomon, an “athleisurewear” company hoping to expand their range and their profits, when disaster happens. Aided by Raj (Nat Jobe) and Fred (Jemwel Danao), Joan looks for inspiration from Romola (Camila Ponte Alvarez) as the search for a way to inspire the customers, their “family,” hoping to bring the company back from the brink, by way of employing a guru. What follows is a hilarious romp exploring yoga and yogis, looking for how to connect to the spiritual in order to save a company who seems to value profits over prophets.
Andrea Moor is fabulous as the over-stressed CEO, Joan, who is trying to rebuild the company after a scandal involving the previous CEO. Her interactions with Romola are particularly delightful. Nat Jobe shines as the uptight Raj who looks to appropriate his own culture with hilarious results. Jemwel Danao is wonderful as the Fred who loves marketing and has some fun moments as he and Joan come up with a plan to save the company. Camila Ponte Alvarez proves to be insanely flexible and hilarious as Romola, the yoga instructor who loves swag and truly believes in the power of yoga. Rounding out the cast is Thomas Larkin who plays John, the owner of Jojomon and Alan, the mysterious guru found in a cave, who Joan hopes will be the saviour the company needs. His performance is measured and provides many laugh out loud moments.
The play is masterfully directed by Mina Morita. The scene changes are beautifully crafted. This is a truly wonderful production. The comedy is sharp and witty, as well as being slapstick at times. It’s a play to see if you love to laugh, appreciate the role of activewear in our society and love to poke fun at giant companies. It will leave the audience asking if they, too, need a guru!
