Old Fitz Theatre & Good Time Theatrics: Tick, Tick... BOOM! - Review by Dean McGrath

Beyond the dark stairwell at the back of the Old Fitzroy Hotel, you'll find a warm, bright intimate space that is the Old Fitz Theatre, currently home to Good Time Theatrics production of Tick, Tick... BOOM! A musical that explores many themes surrounding ambition, success, creativity, self-doubt and that feeling of impending doom that creeps towards us all. It follows Jonathan as he looms ever closer to 30 years old, the promising yet unrecognised musical composer struggling with his life choices past, present and future. He is supported, advised and challenged by his best friend Michael & girlfriend Susan as his theatre workshop & that dreaded birthday get closer & closer.

Director Kurtis Laing has brilliantly portrayed the essence of Larson's autobiographical journey with heartfelt sincerity, outstanding comedic choices and a vibrant energy. In such a space as the Old Fitz Theatre he makes many smart choices in the ways he has used props and set pieces for multiple scenes. Also utilised cleverly, are the three brilliant performers he has cast. Each of whom breathes life into their roles. All with great comedic timing, dynamic energy and what comes across as genuine rapport with each other. They give the impression that not only do they love performing but love performing together.

The part of Michael is played by the brilliant, Hamish Wells. Not only does Wells get some of the biggest laughs of the show, his singing voice is phenomenal. He truly found the comedy in every scene and a palpable energy that was a joy to watch especially in the dance numbers. Tessa Olsson is astonishing as Susan, her awareness of the space and allowing nuance and subtlety to critical scenes was masterful. She truly shines whenever she is on stage but the standout had to be "Come to Your Senses" which deserved every bit of the amazing applause it roused. Brodie Masini delivers a standout performance as Jon, navigating the complexities of an artist torn between his artistic passions and the practicalities of life. His portrayal is both compelling and deeply relatable, drawing the audience into Jon's world of aspirations and self-discovery. His confidence and comfort on stage had the audience with him from the very beginning of the show all the way to the end.

The musical numbers were a definite highlight, thanks to the skilful musical direction of Iris Wu. The live band that was almost sitting with us in some cases, added a layer of dynamism Enhancing the overall experience and immersing the audience in Larson's iconic sound. The comic and musical timing of numbers like "Therapy" and "Sunday" surpassed any other rendition I've seen or heard.

Tick, Tick... BOOM! is a testament to the enduring relevance of Larson's work and the power of live theater to inspire and uplift. With its stellar performances, captivating music, and heartfelt storytelling, this production not only pays homage to Jonathan Larson's legacy but also resonates with anyone who has ever dared to dream. Whether you're a fan of musical theater or simply looking for an evening of heartfelt storytelling, this adaptation is sure to leave a lasting impression. Don't miss the opportunity to experience the magic of brunch, twinkies and existential dread.
