Sydney Fringe Festival 2024: My Kink is Homicide - Review by Matt Dorahy

Cody's hiding a secret from her girlfriend - a murderous one. Men are dead and now Daddy Law wants the truth. Dykes, dildos, drag. This queer comedy has it all.

My Kink Is Homicide featured a strong cast of 3 that carried a night of laughs, pure entertainment that truly defined the word ‘camp’ and most importantly, Homicide.

The story follows couple Cody and Sophie as they deal with the death of Brett, the big Boss in charge. But it seemed Cody and Sophie already knew what was in store as they both believed they were the culprit; they both attempted to murder Brett.

With dare I say, a flawless performance from Eleanor Oppen-Riley in the role of Cody. They sold the tone of the show with captivating storytelling from start to finish. They knew the assignment and came to deliver!

Ashleigh Chandler takes on the mysterious role of Sophie, at surface level, she brings some well-needed sanity to the play, seemingly providing the voice of reason and morality. Yet slowly revealing more of the dark nature of the show and her character in each twist and turn.

The scene stealer Natanyah Forbes, didn’t come to play. She rounded out the rest of the ensemble portraying several roles, most importantly, the twinky boss Brett and the raunchy boisterous Daddy Law. Natanyah brought each of these roles nuance and versatility with the most outrageous characterisation and facial expressions I have ever seen. Her level of professionalism was beyond evident when her pants split during the first 5 seconds of her being on stage. She moved right through the scene without even cracking a smile, to the point where the audience was left wondering if it was planned.

Scenes became interjected by interviews to lay down some backstory, featuring cameo appearances from Writer/Producer Siena Bordignon as the boom mic holder, making it clear that each character was about to drop some insane lore. My personal favourite cameo from Siena had to be the Tampon bullet, ala Hamilton.

Director/Writer Louie O’Carroll, had a clear vision and executed it perfectly. A minimalist set, featuring a green couch and a versatile pink bar cart (Cosmo and Wanda, you’re not slick) which was used to transform into the rest of the set pieces.

The middle of the show was broken up by a ‘not’ intermission, featuring some twisted advertisements; A camp killer fitness instructor, a comically large commitment Carabiner and Agatha’s iconic Anzac biscuit recipe.

It featured references to all our favourites, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and the iconic queer classic: Riverdale. With equally as iconic choreography by Rosa Press-Hayes, and rounding out the team was Assistant Producer Emily Whiting.

All in all, it was a great night of camp comedy and a very enjoyable whodunnit mystery, unlike anything I’ve seen before. I’d be very interested to see what else writers Louie and Siena have in store for the future! I sure hope it’s not the end for Daddy Law, as I very much crave an entire spin-off dedicated to him.
